Steps for Analysing a Poem


  1. Read through the poem aloud to identify any words you are unfamiliar with.
  2. Look up the words you are unfamiliar with in the dictionary.
  3. Read through the poem again and underline or highlighting any poetic techniques
  4. Answer these questions giving as much detail as possible:

1. What is the poem about?
2. What point of view does the speaker have about the topic?
3. What is the tone of the poem?
4. What techniques have been used? (Consider rhyme, rhythm, imagery, alliteration, onomatopoeia, repetition and any other techniques you can identify)
5. Why have these techniques been used? (For example, are there words that have been repeated? Why? What effect does this have on the meaning of the poem?
